Meet the Team: Douglas Suttle
Next up in the Meet the Team series is Douglas Suttle, typesetter, book designer, and founder of our newly acquired imprint Fum d'Estampa. Read on as he shares about Fum d'Estampa and Deep Vellum’s collaborations, the pleasures of details in typesetting, and John Landis’s 1980 musical action comedy film “The Blues Brothers.”
Where are you based? Barcelona, Spain.
What’s your role at Deep Vellum? In addition to typesetting titles and helping with book design, since December I also manage and edit the Fum d’Estampa Press list for Deep Vellum.
What's the best or most interesting part of your job? The best and most interesting part of my job is being able to work with fantastic professionals on some of the very best books in print today. I also really enjoy trying out new design touches when typesetting titles and debating the finer points of leading and gutters with colleagues.
What is your favorite book we've published, and why? The Poor Mouth. Because it’s great.
What’s your background ? I’m from the UK, studied History and Philosophy, and now live and work in Barcelona.
What’s a forthcoming book from any of our imprints that you're looking forward to? While perhaps I’m biased, I’m most looking forward to The Calf, by Leif Hoghaug! It will be FdE’s first book under the Deep Vellum umbrella.
What's the best underrated movie? The Blues Brothers - Too many stars and amazing performances to mention here… Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Duck Dunn, Steve Cropper AND Carrie Fisher: “It’s a hundred And six miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes. It’s dark, and we’re wearing sunglasses. Hit it.”
