DEAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Four-way international simultaneous release of Erin Vincent's FOURTEEN WAYS OF LOOKING
DALLAS, TX — Deep Vellum is pleased to announce the acquisition of international rights for Erin Vincent’s Fourteen Ways of Looking, a lead title of our Spring-Summer 2026 season. Vincent’s forthcoming memoir will be simultaneously published through four English-language publishers in April, 2026; A Strange Object (US), CB Editions (UK), Strange Light (Canada), and Upswell (Australia).
Since its founding in 2013, Deep Vellum’s mission has been to both generate and engage in global literary conversations. We are honored to further this mission through the simultaneous release of this hotly anticipated memoir on three continents next summer.
“A Strange Object publishes strange and wildly moving fiction as well as compelling nonfiction that defies categorization,” says Jill Meyers, Editorial Director of A Strange Object. “Fourteen Ways of Looking, a meditation on loss studded with moments of surprise, humor, and intellectual delight, absolutely moves beyond categorization. It slips across geographical boundaries, too. We are thrilled to be part of a larger effort to share this dazzling memoir with readers in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK.”
Charles Boyle of CB Editions comments, “Something magic is going on here, and the more magic, the more human. Perfect for the CB Editions list, Erin’s book is a gift to readers who are prepared to trust the writer.”
"Erin Vincent’s manuscript delivered a blast of brilliance when it landed in my inbox earlier this year,” says Terri-ann White, Upswell’s Director and Publisher. “It is sophisticated and so full of joy. It is a quintessential Upswell book: hybrid in its construction and with the savvy to keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what she can possibly deliver on the next page. Erin also has the ability to make me laugh and swoon with erudition and her cut and thrust."
Deep Vellum is also excited to reveal the cover for this genre-defying blend of memoir, poetry, and history, designed by Emily Mahon. The book’s U.S. publication is set for April 7, 2026, and pre-orders are available now via Deep Vellum’s website.
About Fourteen Ways of Looking:
When Erin Vincent was fourteen years old, both of her parents were killed in a traffic accident. Almost forty years later, the number 14 began haunting Erin, appearing everywhere–in the books she was reading, in films, TV shows, and on the news.
The repetition felt significant, so Erin began to explore the number beyond her personal understanding. The result is Fourteen Ways of Looking, a memoir of magisterial fractals and a profound meditation on grief, memory, and the creative process.
Erin Vincent is the author of Grief Girl (Penguin Random House) which was named a New York Public Library Best Book and an American Library Association Best Book Nominee. Her work has appeared in Electric Literature, The Guardian, Meanjin, The Offing, and elsewhere. She holds an MA in creative writing from the University of Technology Sydney and is currently studying for a PhD in creative writing with a focus on fragmentary literature written by women in the 21st century. She lives in a little cottage with her lovely and talented husband, Adam Knott, and their lovely and talented cat, Little Eve.
A Strange Object is an imprint of Deep Vellum, dedicated to publishing surprising, deeply resonant fiction alongside thoughtful works of nonfiction. Cofounded by editor Jill Meyers, A Strange Object champions books that haunt and inspire—works that engulf, that take risks, that buck form.
CB Editions publishes short fiction, poetry, translations and other work which ‘might otherwise fall through the cracks between the big publishers’ (Guardian). The first four books were published in 2007. CB Editions titles have won prizes for fiction, poetry and translation, and have been shortlisted for many other awards.
Upswell was founded in 2021 with the purpose of publishing books that speak to each other across a set of intellectual interests. Upswell releases a small number of distinctive books each year in, broadly, the areas of narrative nonfiction, fiction and poetry. They are interested in books that elude easy categorizing and work somewhat against the grain of current trends, focusing on books that may have trouble finding a home in the contemporary Australian publishing sector.
From the team behind Penguin Random House Canada’s award-winning magazine Hazlitt, Strange Light publishes unpredictable, innovative authors telling personal and provocative and experimental stories, even those that defy easy categorization. With a list composed of both Canadian and international titles, Strange Light publishes vital voices, new and established alike, that command attention and curiosity, offering readers the delight of the unexpected.
Deep Vellum is a nonprofit publishing house and literary arts organization with the mission to bring the world into conversation through literature. Founded in 2013 in Dallas, TX, Deep Vellum has expanded to encompass six distinct publishing imprints and is now the largest publisher of translated literature in the United States.
