WE ARE HIRING! Booksellers, Floor Manager & Buyer, Inventory & Fulfillment Manager

Deep Vellum is seeking part-time booksellers and lead managers to join the team at our Dallas-based storefront. We are looking for booksellers who can commit to working a minimum of two days per week, between 10-25 hours, and lead managers who can commit to working 30 hours per week, with the opportunity to grow into a full-time position.

The ideal candidates will have a strong passion for the work of independent publishers and be familiar with our mission to bring the world into conversation through literature; knowledge of our published books; a history of customer service work and bookselling; proactive communication and collaboration skills; engaging with the publishing industry to support the best writers, translators, and publishers; inviting the public into the literary world; and an enthusiasm for representing Deep Vellum and Dalkey Archive Press’s titles to the reading public.

Part-time booksellers will be responsible for the daily management of the storefront, such as handling customer service, contributing to publishing and programming needs, and maintaining store cleanliness, displays, and merchandising.

The floor manager & buyer will be responsible for selecting and buying titles and overseeing day-to-day bookstore operations, staff performance, and customer experience, including managing part-time booksellers, handselling to customers, and maintaining store standards.

The fulfillment & inventory manager will oversee inventory systems, warehouse operations, and all order fulfillment for the bookstore, offsite events, and web sales. 

All positions will liaise with the overall programming and publishing operations within Deep Vellum, a uniquely structured 501c3 nonprofit organization.

Candidates should be detail-oriented, proactive, organized, and self-managed. Prior experience in bookselling is required.


Booksellers will be responsible for the following:

  • Manage daily opening and closing procedures

  • Work on-site and off-site events

  • Maintain store standards (merchandising, cleanliness, displays)

  • Handle customer service

  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and mission alignment

  • Coordinate with other staff to support events and launches

  • Fulfill online sales and publishing marketing mailings

  • Communicate operational needs and updates to leadership


The Floor Manager & Buyer will be responsible for the following:

  • Select and order titles across categories

  • Maintain relationships with distributors, publishers, and sales representatives

  • Submit and track invoices

  • Support programming (events and book clubs) with strategic title selection

  • Manage daily opening and closing procedures

  • Supervise, train, and schedule booksellers 

  • Serve as point person for staff questions, issues, and conflict resolution

  • Maintain store standards (merchandising, cleanliness, displays)

  • Handle customer service issues and escalations

  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and mission alignment 

  • Coordinate with other staff to support events and launches

  • Communicate operational needs and updates to leadership


The Fulfillment & Inventory Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Oversee inventory tracking, receiving, and reconciliation

  • Manage Dallas-warehouse organization and workflows

  • Liaise with Deep Vellum Publishing’s distributor, Consortium Book Sales & Distribution, on national warehouse inventory, fulfillment, and distribution

  • Coordinate with postal services to ensure customer/contributor satisfaction

  • Oversee direct-to-consumer and institutional order fulfillment (subscriptions, online sales, contributor copies, author copies, galley mailing, etc)

  • Forecast inventory needs (for both DV titles as well as store inventory) in coordination with the publishing Sales team and the storefront Buyer 

  • Troubleshoot fulfillment delays, errors, or shortages

  • Maintain systems for accurate reporting and accountability

  • Train staff on inventory and fulfillment procedures


REQUIREMENTS

Experience in customer service, specifically in bookstores (handselling, merchandising, etc.)
Familiarity with Deep Vellum and Dalkey Archive Press’s catalog
Availability to work weekends and occasional night events and festivals

LOCATION

Must be located in North Texas to work in our bookstore headquarters at 3000 Commerce Street, Dallas, TX 75226 and at off-site events around North Texas. 

COMPENSATION

Pay is commensurate with experience. All positions are part-time, with opportunities for growth.
