Forthcoming in Summer 2026: FILTH EATERS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Deep Vellum to publish Aztec gothic vampire saga Filth Eaters in Summer 2026

DALLAS, TX — Deep Vellum has acquired World English rights to Filth Eaters by Ito Romo. A high-strung and inventive literary horror that will delight fans of Stephen Graham Jones and Mariana Enriquez, Romo’s novel traces the thousand-year lineage of a new kind of vampire—the mestizo Filth Eater. From the Indus River Delta in 1099 to the Muslim Spanish empire of the 1400s to a flooded cyberpunk New York City of the future, this surprising, bloody saga turns a new page for a centuries-old genre.

Ito Romo was born and raised on the border in Laredo, Texas. His recent work, dubbed “Chicano Gothic” and “Chicano Noir,” shows the dark and gritty life along Interstate 35 through South Texas, where his family has lived for nine generations since 1750. He lives in San Antonio and is Professor of English Language and Literature at St. Mary’s University. Romo received his PhD from Texas Tech University’s Creative Writing Program and was recently inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters. He is the author of The Border is Burning (2013) and El Puente / The Bridge (2001), both published by University of New Mexico Press.

Filth Eaters is slated to be published in hardcover in May 2026.
