We Are Hiring: Marketing Director
We are seeking a Marketing Director to join the team at Deep Vellum and Dalkey Archive Press. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for the work of independent publishers and a thorough understanding of nonprofit organizations; a history of developing and managing innovative digital content strategies; proactive communication and collaboration skills; and an enthusiasm for representing Deep Vellum and Dalkey Archive Press’s titles to the reading public.
The Marketing Director will work closely with the Publicity Director, Development Director, and Marketing & Publicity Coordinator to collaboratively and creatively grow Deep Vellum’s impact and mission, expand our readership, and amplify our nonprofit fundraising and development initiatives. The Marketing Director will be responsible for digital marketing campaigns for Deep Vellum’s list, along with our imprints A Strange Object, Dalkey Archive Press, Phoneme Media, La Reunion, and Fum d’Estampa: an impactful, diverse list of 50-60 titles per year.
Candidates should be detail-oriented, proactive, motivated, and self-managed. Experience with marketing for independent presses is preferred. Above all else, we are looking for a creative and enthusiastic team player who is ready to grow Deep Vellum’s marketing footprint.
Our Marketing Director will be responsible for the following:
Crafting individualized, holistic marketing campaigns for a list of 50+ frontlist titles annually, including translated literature, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and reissued classics
Creating and executing marketing strategy for the organization as a whole, including the organization’s branding, messaging, graphics, and original digital and physical content, in close collaboration with executive and development departments on fundraising, brand awareness, and strategic initiatives
Developing and executing marketing initiatives for backlist titles, collaborating closely with sales and publicity colleagues to maximize reach
Collaborating with other department leaders and Deep Vellum bookstore to promote events, book tours, festivals and fundraisers
Managing and maintaining a consistent social media social media schedule across imprints on multiple platforms (Instagram, X, Facebook, and Bluesky), honing brand voice in alignment with Deep Vellum’s mission to bring the world into conversation through literature
Planning, writing, and promoting weekly newsletter campaigns, including Deep Vellum and Dalkey Archive Press imprint newsletters, title- or series-specific initiatives, acquisition announcements, and fundraising outreach campaigns
In collaboration with colleagues in publicity and sales, overseeing the seasonal creation of narrative metadata including descriptive copy and key selling points, as well as collaborating on art direction and cover design project management
Overseeing development, design, printing, and distribution of marketing materials such as seasonal catalogs, promotional postcards, and merchandise
Communicating proactively with authors and agents about social media coverage, newsletters, event promotion, cover design, metadata development, and general updates
Collaborating with the development team on messaging and visualization for grant writing and fundraising pitches
REQUIREMENTS
Experience in literary marketing (independent publishing preferred but not necessary)
Proficiency in, or ability to become proficient in: email marketing software (we currently use MyEmma), Microsoft Office, Dropbox
Occasional travel to conferences or festivals when necessary for national book campaigns.
LOCATION
Must be located in Dallas, Texas or New York City.
COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position ranges $45,000-60,000. Benefits include health, vision, dental, and life insurance; generous annual vacation dates; flexible sick leave; and parental leave policies.
