North Texas Giving Day 2019

It has been a big year for Deep Vellum Publishing. Thanks to our readers and supporters, we have been able to broaden our support of the literary world in Texas and beyond. This year, we acquired two independent presses (A Strange Object and Phoneme), bringing them in as editorial imprints. With these two imprints, our catalog has grown to almost 100 different books written in almost 40 different languages, including those that are indigenous and endangered – and, for the first time, English-language originals as well – including books by Dallas authors!

In addition to broadening our worldwide vision, we’ve been able to bring support back to the local community. We are working on La Reunion Publishing, an imprint devoted to the untold stories of Texas. With this project we will be able to extend support and a publishing network to the incredible writers and thinkers in our own state. Future titles for La Reunion include a gorgeous photographic tour of downtown Dallas through the eyes of a pedestrian, a history of LGTBQ+ Dallas, a “People’s History of Dallas” project, and the first-ever English translation of To Texas! by Victor Considerant, the book that he used to advocate for folks from Europe to join him in moving to “the Promised Land” of Dallas, where he would set up the La Reunion colony, whose legacy is still felt across the city today, and not just in the name of Reunion Tower!

By giving to Deep Vellum during North Texas Giving Day, you’ll help to write the story of Dallas by investing in the evolution of Dallas into a literary hub. You’ll help bring international authors to Dallas to share their culture and creative process with incredible local authors, an exchange of ideas that will do so much to benefit our area’s readers and writers. This year, we’re hosting beloved Korean author Jung Young Moon in North America, where he will be presenting in Dallas and Corsicana (followed by the Texas Book Festival, Toronto International Festival of Authors, and bookstores across the country), and our author Donna Wilhelm will present her transformative memoir A Life of My Own at Arts & Letters Live at the Dallas Museum of Art on December 5th in conversation with Peggy Wallace Kennedy.

Thanks to your gifts, we have been able to organize literary presentations in Dallas and beyond. In the coming year, we will continue to create a network between the world and Dallas as a global city, as we work every day to put our mission into practice by bringing the world into conversation through literature  – bringing the stories of the world to Dallas, and the stories of Dallas to the world. With each new author and initiative, we are able to broaden our community outreach, foster dialogue beyond boundaries, and bring together lovers of words everywhere.
